In 1993 I took a leap of faith by opening JP’s Coffee & Espresso Bar in Holland, MI. At the time it was the biggest decision I had ever made (besides getting married) and everyone thought I was crazy. Starbucks had just entered the Chicago market and had the amazing number of 250 stores. Coffee shops were relatively new and our first couple of years were spent explaining what a “latte” was. All I knew was I loved coffee, had a dream and had to do it.
I still own JP’s, though I no longer work the store. I oversee operations and am at my store office weekly when I am not traveling, but my goal had always been to work on my store rather than in it. With that goal accomplished, and because of a great staff and systematized operations, I am free to pursue my passions and invest in other endeavors.
Today JP’s is a successful and profitable coffee bar regularly grossing just under 7 figures in annual revenues. With hard work, great people and a great location JP’s has become the “Cheers” of Holland, MI and the foundation of the Midwest Barista School and On Track Coffee Consulting where my staff and I train and educate and I consult people going into the coffee business. I also write a monthly column for the Specialty Coffee Retailer magazine called “Jack’s Blend” where I share from my experience as a businessman and coffee bar owner.
My goal for coffeegroot.com is to create a valuable resource of content for current and future business owners and offer inspiration, education and tools to help you succeed.
Enjoy!

Can’t wait to read these… tell everyone I said “hey”.
Thanks Josh, everyone says “hey” back. Tracy is writing and about 1/2 way through her next book. Evan graduates from basic training in less than two weeks. Gray and Riley are in school and doing good.
Jack:
One of your fairly-recent graduates, Tim Rask, referred me to this blog. Wonderful! Tim and I are hoping/praying to open a “modest but world class” coffee shop here in the Land of Mt. Everest in early December. In the meantime, we will be regularly “looking in” on your advice here. Thanks!
